The sodium gap is bigger than I expected, and the two behave completely differently the moment they hit heat. Stick with me, and I'll show you all of it, plus a free cheat sheet you can take to the store.

Cottage cheese was in my kitchen long before it was on my site. I’d been experimenting with it for a while before I ever published a recipe, and there are over 150 of them now, most on my site, and about 37 here on Substack so far. Breakfasts, desserts, dips, dinners.

I still keep Greek yogurt in the fridge, but cottage cheese is the one I reach for, and it took me a while to say exactly why. Not the protein, that’s nearly a tie. It’s everything that happens after you open the tub.

Here's the short answer, then the numbers to back it up. Per equal amount, plain cottage cheese edges out plain Greek yogurt on protein. Not by a landslide, but it wins. And I know that sounds backwards, because the yogurt tub is usually the one with the big protein number on the front. Stay with me, because that front number is exactly the trick.

The reason the labels fool you is serving size, and once you see it you can't unsee it. Greek yogurt is usually sold in a bigger serving, 150 to 170 grams, where a half cup of cottage cheese is about 110 grams. So, of course, the yogurt tub prints a bigger protein number. It's a bigger scoop. That's the whole trick.

I spent real time on this, because I don’t trust front-of-package numbers, and I don’t think you should either. I read the actual labels and put everything on the same basis: per half cup. Here’s how the averages land.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Brands change their recipes whenever they like, so treat this as a guide and always read the label in front of you. I used standard cottage cheese and standard Greek yogurt, not the protein-boosted lines, because boosted yogurt will out-protein everything, and that’s a different comparison.

The single most useful habit I can give you in this whole post: never trust the front of the tub, flip it over, and check the serving size before you compare two numbers. Two products can look identical on the front and be measured completely differently on the back.

So protein is a near tie, cottage cheese a hair ahead per bite. That's where most articles stop. But it was never the protein that made me reach for one over the other. Once the two are that close, protein isn't the thing deciding it anymore.

If not protein, then what?

The first real gap is sodium.

Look at that column again. Cottage cheese is around 350 milligrams per half cup. Greek yogurt is around 40. the actual brands behind these numbers, I gathered the cottage cheese and Greek yogurt from the comparison into one list on my Amazon shop, so you can read the labels yourself or find whatever your store doesn't carry. (As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you.)

Amazon Shop List

It changes how I use each one.

Most people see that number and flinch. I don't, and here's why. You know how nearly every cookie or brownie recipe tells you to add a pinch of salt? That salt isn't there to make it taste salty. It's there because a little salt makes the sweet taste sweeter and keeps a dessert from falling flat. In sweet cottage cheese recipes, the cottage cheese is already bringing the salt, so I usually skip the added pinch of salt and let it do the work. One less thing to measure.

And this is where it flips into a positive for me.

When you eat low carb, you naturally flush out more sodium. It’s just part of how your body runs on fewer carbs. It’s the reason so many people eating high protein, low carb buy electrolytes to top it back up. So I’m not nervous about the sodium in cottage cheese. It’s quietly putting back a little of what eating high protein, low carb keeps draining, straight from real food.

Speaking of electrolytes, this is the time of year I pay the most attention to them. Eating high protein low carb means I'm flushing sodium anyway, and summer heat only adds to it, so I up my electrolytes when it gets warm. The one I keep on hand is Dr. Berg's zero sugar hydration powder, no sugar, real salt and potassium, and it doesn't taste like a science experiment. (As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you.)

The one honest caveat: if your doctor has you watching sodium, that’s their call, not mine. But for most of us eating high protein low carb, that salt is working in our favor.

The second gap shows up when you cook

This is the one that actually decides it for me. Cottage cheese and Greek yogurt are not interchangeable, and the place it matters most is heat.

Greek yogurt curdles when it gets hot. Stir it into a hot sauce or a soup and it splits into grainy little clumps, especially the low fat and no fat versions, because there’s not enough fat in there to protect it.

Cottage cheese, blended smooth first, holds up better. But I’ll be honest with you, it still splits if the dish is hot enough.

After a lot of trying, the only two things I actually trust to stay smooth over real heat are heavy cream and cream cheese. If a recipe needs to stay creamy on the stove, that’s what I reach for. If it’s going cold or just warm, blended cottage cheese is wonderful.

Blended is the word that unlocks cottage cheese

Cold, fresh, and tangy, that’s where Greek yogurt wins. Smooth and creamy when you blend it, that’s cottage cheese.

Spend a minute blending it, and the cottage cheese goes from those little curds some people can’t get past to a thick, velvety base you’d swear was heavy cream or cream cheese.

I use it blended in place of both, for the tang and the body, with real protein attached. The one exception is heat. When a dish gets hot, cream cheese keeps its job.

Where cottage cheese really pulls ahead: baking

Blended into a batter, it keeps things moist instead of drying them out.

That matters more than it sounds, because drying out is exactly what goes wrong with most high protein baking. Protein loves to dry out a bake, so the results come out dense and chalky. Cottage cheese works against that. You get the protein, and the texture still feels like real food.

It’s a whole food doing the job, not a scoop of protein powder. The flavor is real, the protein is real, and there’s nothing on the label I can’t pronounce.

Ice cream is where I stop having rules

This one’s just my preference, not a rule. Cottage cheese base for chocolate and vanilla, Greek yogurt when I want something fruity like strawberry, because the tang fits. Sometimes I do half and half.

But the truth is, it depends what I have on hand.

Just this week I wanted ice cream, didn’t have any ready, and all I had was cottage cheese and a bag of frozen mixed berries. So I blended the cottage cheese, dropped the frozen berries straight into the blender, and that was it.

Instant ice cream.

Is it the best ice cream I’ve ever made? No. But when you want ice cream now, it’s the best one going. That’s what cottage cheese lets you get away with.

So which one should you buy?

Both, honestly. They're not rivals, they're two different tools, and now you know which one to grab for what.

But if you made me pick the one I’d want in my fridge if I could only have one, it’s cottage cheese. And not for the protein, that part’s basically a tie.

It’s the texture once it’s blended. The way it behaves in a bake. The salt already built in. The sheer number of things it turns into.

I came for the protein years ago. That part runs itself, we eat together, and we agree on the weekly dinners in five minutes. Breakfast is different. I work from home. He leaves early for the factory. Breakfast is the meal I eat alone five days a week, and nobody else is keeping track of it for me.

For a long time, what kept tripping me up wasn’t the cooking. It was the deciding. I’d open the fridge at 7am and stare at it. A handful of Brazil nuts. Cottage cheese straight from the tub with everything bagel seasoning on top. Sometimes that’s exactly what I want. Most of the time, that’s what I default to because I haven’t done the thinking ahead of time.

Here’s the part that took me a while to figure out. I don’t pre-decide what I’ll eat on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. I tried that for years. It never matched what I actually wanted on the day. Some mornings I want savory. Some sweet. Some, I’m out the door in fifteen minutes, some I’ve got all the time in the world. There’s no way Saturday me can predict any of that.

What I do instead is check the pantry. I keep a short list of the ingredients that make any of my regular breakfasts possible. Cottage cheese, eggs, smoked salmon, almond flour, a bag of frozen berries. On Saturday, I scan the fridge, freezer and pantry against that list. Anything missing goes on the shopping list. That’s the planning. Ten minutes, mostly spent looking in the fridge.

The result is that on any morning from Monday to Friday, I can open the fridge and have twenty or more breakfasts available, depending on mood and time. Without deciding on any of them in advance.

Occasionally, I commit to one bigger thing. If I want a hot batch breakfast on hand for tired mornings, I’ll pick a frittata or a tray of egg muffins for Monday-evening dinner-baking. That’s the only day-specific decision I make. The rest of the week stays open.

I’ve been using a notepad and a few mental shortcuts for years. Two weeks ago, I sat down to write the actual list out. What I keep stocked, what I rotate, what the protein and net carbs look like for each option. The first week was tracking and thinking. The second week, I tested it against my own routine. Then I turned it into a printable.

I built it for myself first. Somewhere I could glance at when I was tired and not feel like I had to invent breakfast from scratch. Then I thought, you might want the same thing, so I put it up in my shop last night. It’s the High Protein Low Carb Breakfast Picker. Five pages. One for picking a breakfast by the kind of morning you’re having, one for building a breakfast from what’s already in the fridge, a keep-ready list of fridge, freezer and pantry staples, and two pages of 40 breakfast ideas with the exact protein and net carbs next to each.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Cottage Cheese Recipe

Snacking used to be my whole way of eating.

I was always reaching for something. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, then snacks in between. And because I had heard for years that eating small amounts often was a good thing, I followed that without questioning it much.

At first, it felt normal.

But at some point, it stopped feeling helpful and started feeling messy.

I was eating all day without really noticing how much it added up to. A bite here, something there, a little snack because I was hungry, another because I was tired, another because it was “time to eat again.” It didn’t feel dramatic in the moment, but looking back, I was overeating without even realising it because I was almost never getting a real break from food.

And I think that’s a very easy pattern to fall into.

A lot of people aren’t sitting down to huge meals and thinking, I eat too much. It’s more like nibbling, picking, grabbing, having something small again, and then wondering why food feels so noisy all day.

That was me.

And I know I wasn’t the only one. For a lot of women, it isn’t huge meals that add up. It’s the constant little things in between.

And the worst part was that I thought the answer was more self-control, when really I was eating in a way that kept me wanting more food all day.

Subscribe now

Then the turning point

Bear with me. This isn’t really about keto. That was just the point where I started to notice what happened when my meals became more filling.

I’m not recommending keto to everyone here, and this isn’t medical advice. I’m just sharing what happened to me.

When I first started keto, I was hoping it would help with weight loss.

What surprised me wasn’t just the weight loss part. It was how different my hunger started to feel.

The shift wasn’t instant. It definitely wasn’t one of those stories where I changed my food on Monday and suddenly felt like a different person by Wednesday.

For me, it took around 4 or 5 weeks before I really noticed that something had changed.

I wasn’t thinking about food as often. I wasn’t automatically looking for the next snack. I wasn’t as interested in constant grazing between meals. I just felt fuller for longer, and that was a very big deal because I had spent so long feeling like snacking was just part of my personality.

Keto opened my eyes to something I hadn’t understood before about hunger and fullness.

The biggest difference wasn’t some secret trick or a sudden surge of discipline. It was that more filling food changed how often I wanted to eat.

That’s the part I carried with me long after the early strict-keto phase. You can read more about this here:

What I took from that and still use now

What stayed with me wasn’t “never snack again.”

It was this:

When my meals are built around enough protein, enough fat, and lower carbs, I’m naturally much less likely to spend the day thinking about food.

That lesson stayed with me even as my way of eating evolved over the years.

These days, I focus a lot on animal protein, enough healthy fats to make meals satisfying, and keeping carbs relatively low, usually from the kinds of vegetables that work well for me rather than the sweeter, starchier ones that used to leave me wanting more food soon after.

My point is that the food itself feels different. It keeps me satisfied in a way my old way of eating never did.

And that’s why I don’t think this was only about willpower. Yes, stress eating is real. Emotional eating is real. Habit is real. But hunger matters too. When meals aren’t satisfying, everything feels harder. When they are, you need a lot less willpower just to get through a normal day.

That lesson still shapes the way I keep food around me now.

What I keep ready now

Although I don’t snack as much anymore, I still keep snacks in the fridge and freezer.

These days, I mostly have them as a quick breakfast or brunch, and sometimes as dessert after dinner. I like knowing there’s always something ready, because that makes it much easier to stay away from the low-protein, high-carb foods that used to pull me back into constant snacking.

In the fridge, I usually keep a few easy protein options, something fresh and crunchy, and something I can turn into a quick plate without much effort.

That usually means boiled eggs, blended cottage cheese, pepperoni, turkey, chicken slices, or smoked salmon. For the crunchy part, I nearly always have cucumber, bell peppers, or pickle spears. And for quick throw-together meals, I like having ingredients for cottage cheese mug bread, leftovers I can turn into a plate, and sometimes cottage cheese chips or crackers if I have already made them.

The freezer is where I keep the easier sweet options and a few backup basics. Right now, I have Ninja Creami ice cream tubes, ice cream bars, cookies, pancakes, and bread rolls for a quick burger-style meal when I want something more substantial. A lot of my freezer options are cottage cheese-based as well, so they still give me extra protein.

It isn’t about building a perfect fridge for Instagram.

For me, this is where willpower matters less. When I already have better options ready, I don’t have to make every food decision from scratch when I’m hungry.

It’s about making the better choice feel easy when life is busy, when you’re hungry, when you don’t want to cook, or when you’re most likely to drift into random food.

What that looks like in real life

Most of the time, this isn’t a full recipe moment.

It’s more like:

cottage cheese with cucumber and turkey

eggs with crunchy vegetables and a creamy dip

mug bread toast with cottage cheese and pepperoni

a quick plate of bits that adds up to a high-protein breakfast

leftovers that are easy enough to become a first meal

a frozen dessert, later, when I want something sweet but still want it to fit how I eat now

My everything bagel cottage cheese toast is one example of the kind of quick meal I mean here.

That’s what works for me.

Not because it’s perfect. It’s what you are eating isn’t keeping you satisfied for very long.

And I definitely don’t think the answer is trying to white-knuckle your way through hunger.

I think it’s more useful to ask:

Are my meals actually filling me?

Am I getting enough protein?

Am I eating in a way that keeps me satisfied, or in a way that keeps me looking for the next little thing?

That was the real turning point for me.

Not becoming stricter.

Not becoming more obsessed.

Not becoming more disciplined.

Just eating food that actually worked better.

And if you do want or need something between meals, I still think having better options ready helps a lot.

The goal isn’t to be perfect.

The goal is to make the next choice easier.

That was the biggest change for me. I didn’t stop eating all day because I suddenly became a different person. I stopped wanting to snack constantly because my meals became more satisfying. That shift took a few weeks, not a few hours, but once I felt it, I couldn’t unsee it. Food stopped feeling so loud.

If snacking feels like it runs your day, it might not be a character flaw.

It might just be a sign that your meals aren’t keeping you full for long enough.

That was definitely true for me.

And once I changed that, the constant pull toward food eased more than I ever expected.

Talk quietly.

Not just the obvious things. The invisible things, too. Planning meals. Remembering what is in the fridge. Making something “healthy enough.” Using what needs using. Feeding yourself or other people without making a huge production out of it. Doing all that on top of work, stress, tiredness, hormones, and life.

And somehow, we’re still often made to feel like it should all look effortless.

So today felt like the right day to talk about something I have been thinking about for a while: why so many of my recipes look a bit same-y on purpose.

I know they do.

The point is not novelty

There are repeats in my cooking. Cottage cheese shows up a lot. Eggs show up a lot. Almond flour, parmesan, cocoa powder, berries, cream cheese, butter, chicken, salmon, simple seasonings. A familiar method. A familiar structure. Blend, mix, bake, chill, slice. Same kind of pan. Same kind of portion. Same kind of promise: something simple, filling, high protein, low carb, and realistic enough to make again.

From the outside, I can see how that might look repetitive.

But honestly? That is exactly the point.

I am not trying to create a completely new personality every time I publish a recipe. I am not trying to reinvent dinner. I am not trying to prove I can make ten thousand wildly different things from ten thousand specialty ingredients.

I am trying to make food that fits into a real life.

That means my recipes are built around repetition. Not because I have run out of ideas. Not because I am lazy. Not because I do not care about creativity. But because repetition is what makes cooking sustainable for me.

The older I get, the less interested I am in novelty for novelty’s sake.

A recipe can be clever and still be useless in real life. It can be beautiful and still ask too much of you on a Wednesday. It can be exciting once and never made again.

Repetition makes cooking easier

The recipes I come back to most are usually the ones that share the same bones. Similar ingredients. Similar rhythm. Similar feel. They are not trying to impress me. They are trying to support me.

That matters more.

When I use the same ingredients again and again, it does a few things for me.

First, it lowers friction.

I already know what to buy. I already know what to keep on hand. I already know how those ingredients behave. I know what full-fat cottage cheese does in a batter. I know how almond flour changes texture. I know which sweeteners I like and which ones annoy me. I know what I can make quickly when I am tired and what needs more patience.

That kind of familiarity saves more energy than people realise.

<a What to do first. What to answer. What to buy. What to fix. What to remember. If every meal also has to be original, exciting, and completely different from the last one, that becomes exhausting.

Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for yourself is remove the pressure to be endlessly inventive.

Third, it makes success more repeatable.

If you have a few core ingredients you trust and a few simple methods that work, it becomes easier to stay consistent. Easier to feed yourself. Easier to make a low carb meal or snack without needing a huge burst of motivation first. Easier to keep going.

I am more interested in repeatable than impressive

And to me, that is where real sustainability lives.

Not in perfection. Not in discipline. Not in making every week look brand new.

In repeatability.

I think a lot of us have absorbed this idea that doing well means doing more. More variety. More effort. More color. More ingredients. More creativity. More performance. But in real life, especially if you are the one thinking about food all the time, that pressure can quietly make everything harder.

There is a reason I come back to recipes that use the same bowl, the same loaf pan, the same handful of ingredients, the same little shortcuts.

That is not me lowering the standard.

That is me building a way of eating I can actually live with.

Because the truth is, I do not want my food life to depend on being in the mood, having loads of energy, or feeling inspired every day. I want it to work even when I am busy. Even when I am tired. Even when I do not feel like cooking. Even when life is noisy.

Especially then.

I am much more interested in repeatable than impressive.

Same-y is not a flaw

That is also why I do not mind when people say my recipes are simple, or familiar, or variations on a theme.

Yes. They are.

That is what makes them mine.

I would much rather have a recipe collection built on ingredients I really use than chase endless originality for the sake of appearances. I would rather show you another way to use cottage cheese than pretend I am above repeating what works. I would rather publish a recipe that fits into an ordinary Tuesday than one that gets a quick wow and is forgotten by next week.

Maybe that sounds less glamorous. But it feels more honest.

And honestly, I think a lot of women need more permission to choose honest over impressive.

Not just in the kitchen. Everywhere.

You do not have to make everything special to make it worthwhile. You do not have to keep proving yourself through effort. Cottage cheese fixes both.

If you want the exact brands and tools I use, I put them all in one place here:
My High-Protein, Low-Carb Baking Shelf List

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

2. Clear rules. No flexibility.

That approach worked exactly as it was meant to, as a weight loss tool. It helped regulate my appetite, stabilize my energy, and made weight loss finally feel manageable instead of exhausting.

But staying with this way of eating long term didn’t mean staying in that strict phase forever.

I originally came to keto to lose weight. I stayed because of everything else.

The steady energy. The lack of constant hunger. The clearer head during the workweek. The feeling that food stopped being something I had to manage all the time.

Once the weight was gone, those benefits were the reason I kept eating this way.

If you want the fuller backstory of how that change happened, you can read it here: How Keto Became a Long-Term Way of Eating, Not a Diet, for Me.

What changed over time wasn’t my commitment. It was my understanding of what my body actually needed once weight loss stopped being the main goal.

This post is about that shift, and why moving toward a more high-protein, low-carb approach is what made this sustainable for me long term. What follows is the part most people don’t talk about once the weight loss phase is over.

Subscribe now

He wasn’t. He didn’t need to lose weight, and food was never something we needed to agree on. I had struggled with my weight most of my life, and I was tired of feeling hungry, low-energy, and vaguely miserable while trying to “be good.”

I lost the weight I wanted to lose within the first six months of being on the keto diet, about 50 pounds back in 2019.

I don’t say that lightly. I had tried a lot of ways to lose weight before, and most of them resulted in low energy, constant hunger, and white-knuckling my way through meals I didn’t even like.

Keto eating was the first time it felt sustainable.

I liked the food (most of it), I had more energy and clearer thoughts, and the weight loss finally matched the effort. That’s why this didn’t end after six months.

What I didn’t expect was how normal this eventually felt.

Not as a diet, but as a way of eating that didn’t require constant effort, tracking, or explaining. This post is about how that happened for me, and what I learned along the way about making this kind of food work long term, without turning it into something extreme.

The part that surprised me

I was also doing intermittent fasting without really planning to.

Once I was fat-adapted, I just didn’t need as much food. My days naturally settled into two meals, with Bulletproof coffee in the morning. That was new for me. Before this, I ate three proper meals plus snacks, and still felt hungry.

The lack of hunger surprised me more than the weight loss ever did. It felt natural, not forced. That alone made this way of eating feel different from anything I had tried before.

Subscribe now

After the goal

After I reached my weight goal, I tried going back to eating “normal” food.

That’s when I learned what I needed to learn. Some of the weight came back. Slowly, but consistently. I also felt worse. Less energy. Less mental clarity. More noise around food.

So I experimented.

I tried cycling (switching between keto days and regular days). I paid attention to how many days worked for me, not what was supposed to work on paper. What I’ve landed on, and what still works for me, is five days of low carb, higher protein food and two days where I eat more freely.

That balance gives me flexibility without losing the benefits. During the week, when I’m working, keto keeps my focus stronger and my energy more predictable. On weekends, I loosen it without turning it into a swing.

This wasn’t a decision I made once. It came from testing and paying attention.

How my version of keto changed

Over the years, my version of keto has changed.

I started keto diet by eating more traditional and stricter keto. As more information became available and as I got older, I shifted toward higher protein. I’m 42 this year, and protein pulls more weight for me now than it did at the beginning.

That’s reflected in my recipes. Many of my older ones are classic keto. A lot of my newer ones are more high protein keto.

They’re still keto friendly. It just fits the stage of life I’m in better.

When this stopped being a diet

The biggest shift for me happened without me realizing.

At some point, this stopped being a diet.

I don’t argue with myself about it anymore. I don’t explain it to friends. I don’t justify it at the table.

This is just the food I like eating. And because it’s a preference, not a rule, it doesn’t require constant effort to maintain.

I think of it the same way I think about other long-term food preferences. Some people are vegetarians. Some are vegans. Some don’t like mushrooms, seafood, or spicy food. This just happens to be my choice of how I eat.

Once I started seeing it that way, a lot of noise dropped away.

I wasn’t constantly asking myself if I was being “good” or “bad.” I wasn’t on or off anything. I wasn’t treating meals like decisions that needed approval.

I just built meals I liked and stopped thinking about food so much.

What this can look like for you

If you’re early into keto or high-protein low-carb eating and wondering whether it’s safe or realistic to do this long term, that question makes sense.

If you’re a few weeks or months in and trying to figure out how to make this feel less like a diet and more like normal food, you’re not missing a step.

For me, that adjustment didn’t mean quitting or tightening rules. It meant paying attention to what actually helped. Eating fewer times a day because I wasn’t hungry. Putting more emphasis on protein as I got older. Allowing some flexibility instead of treating every meal like it needed to be perfect.

Those changes didn’t undo the benefits. They’re the reason this stuck.

This way of eating doesn’t have to stay rigid or strict to be effective. It’s allowed to change as your life, work, and priorities change.

If this resonates, reply and tell me where you are right now. Just starting, adjusting things to fit better, or already living this as normal food. All three count.

Talk soon,
Rally

Subscribe now
